Elmo

Elmo is one of the members of the Black Company at the start of the series. He is a sergeant, a consummate professional with a wiry build who is generally fairly grim. He sponsored Croaker for entry into the Company, and is his best friend.

Elmo is fairly humorless. He is not an officer per se, but is a senior member of the Company and takes part in many of the small-scale, dangerous missions. He tends to have bad luck at Tonk. He's more pragmatic than Croaker, as seen when he takes over military operations in Juniper where Croaker was acting as lead officer for a small detachment of the Company.

Elmo is one of the Company warriors hand-picked to personally attack the Dominator after the evil lord is released from the Barrowland. Even though the Dominator is prevented from using his sorcerous powers by the White Rose's magical null field, he remains terrifically strong and more than a match for any mortal soldier. Elmo is thrown thirty feet and killed. Of all the Company dead - and there are many, as only seven members survive this final battle - Croaker mourns Elmo most of all.
